Genetic parameters for stayability to consecutive calvings in Zebu cattle

Longer-lived cows tend to be more profitable and the stayability trait is a selection criterion correlated to longevity. An alternative to the traditional approach to evaluate stayability is its definition based on consecutive calvings, whose main advantage is the more accurate evaluation of young bulls. However, no study using this alternative approach has been conducted for Zebu breeds. Therefore, the objective of this study was to compare linear random regression models to fit stayability to consecutive calvings of Guzerá, Nelore and Tabapuã cows and to estimate genetic parameters for this trait in the respective breeds. Data up to the eighth calving were used. The models included the fixed effects of age at first calving and year-season of birth of the cow and the random effects of contemporary group, additive genetic, permanent environmental and residual. Random regressions were modeled by orthogonal Legendre polynomials of order 1 to 4 (2 to 5 coefficients) for contemporary group, additive genetic and permanent environmental effects. Using Deviance Information Criterion as the selection criterion, the model with 4 regression coefficients for each effect was the most adequate for the Nelore and Tabapuã breeds and the model with 5 coefficients is recommended for the Guzerá breed. For Guzerá, heritabilities ranged from 0.05 to 0.08, showing a quadratic trend with a peak between the fourth and sixth calving. For the Nelore and Tabapuã breeds, the estimates ranged from 0.03 to 0.07 and from 0.03 to 0.08, respectively, and increased with increasing calving number. The additive genetic correlations exhibited a similar trend among breeds and were higher for stayability between closer calvings. Even between more distant calvings (second v. eighth), stayability showed a moderate to high genetic correlation, which was 0.77, 0.57 and 0.79 for the Guzerá, Nelore and Tabapuã breeds, respectively. For Guzerá, when the models with 4 or 5 regression coefficients were compared, the rank correlations between predicted breeding values for the intercept were always higher than 0.99, indicating the possibility of practical application of the least parameterized model. In conclusion, the model with 4 random regression coefficients is recommended for the genetic evaluation of stayability to consecutive calvings in Zebu cattle.

The metal-catalyst-free growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using chemical vapor deposition and the application in field-effect transistors (FETs) is presented. The CNT growth process used a 3-nm-thick Ge layer on SiO2 that was subsequently annealed to produce Ge nanoparticles. Raman measurements show the presence of radial breathing mode (RBM) peaks and the absence of the disorder induced D-band, indicating single walled CNTs (SWNTs) with a low defect density. The synthesized CNTs are used to fabricate CNTFETs and the best device has a state-of-the-art on/off current ratio of 3×108 and a steep sub-threshold slope of 110 mV/decade.

A collaborative survey has shown that V. parahaemolyticus is widely distributed in British coastal waters, sediments and shellfish, especially in southern and western areas. The relatively small numbers in the environment do not present significant health hazards from marine products, provided that processing, storage and distribution are adequate. The presence of this organism in small numbers in British coastal waters or in shellfish should not in itself be regarded as cause for concern.

Commission 36 covers all the physics of stellar atmospheres. The scientific activity in this large field has been very intense during the last triennium and led to the publication of a large number of papers which makes an exhaustive report practically not feasible. As a consequence we decided to keep the format of the preceding report: first a list of areas of current research, then web links for obtaining further information.

Background
The identification of fluctuating confusion is central to improving the differential diagnosis of the common dementias.
AimsTo determine the value of two rating scales to measure fluctuating confusion.
MethodThe agreement between the clinician-rated scale and the scale completed by a non-clinician was determined. Correlations between the two scales were calculated; variability in attention was calculated on a computerised cognitive assessment and variability in delta rhythm on an electroencephalogram (EEG).
ResultsThe Clinician Assessment of Fluctuation and the computerised cognitive assessment were completed for 155 patients (61 Alzheimer's disease, 37 dementia with Lewy bodies, 22 vascular dementia, 35 elderly controls). A subgroup (n=40) received a further evaluation using the One Day Fluctuation Assessment Scale and an EEG. The two scales correlated significantly with each other, and with the neuropsychological and electrophysiological measures of fluctuation.
ConclusionsBoth scales are useful instruments for the clinical assessment of fluctuation in dementia.
Response of barley and pea crops to supplementary UV-B radiation

Four cultivars of winter barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and two cultivars of combining pea (Pisum sativum L.) were grown in the field in the UK (52°N) and irradiated under banks of UV-B lamps in 1994/95 (barley) and 1996 (pea). Supplementary UV-B radiation was applied to treated plots as a proportional addition to the UV-B dose received under a control plot. Treated plants received a UV-B enhancement simulating the consequence of a 15% reduction in the amount of stratospheric ozone. No significant effect on yield and few significant effects on growth, pigment composition or chlorophyll fluorescence variables were detected. However, interplot variability was such that yield differences of <8·5% (pea) and <21·6% (barley) had less than a 95% probability of being detected as significant at the 5% level. The results indicate that yields of pea, and probably barley, would not be markedly affected by the increase in UV-B associated with a 15% reduction in stratospheric ozone. However, given uncertainties, such as the possible interactions between the effects of UV-B and those of other environmental factors, the possibility of significant crop responses to stratospheric ozone depletion cannot be excluded.

Membership of our Board of Advisors to the Editors has remained almost static since the Board was founded in 1995, but significant turnover begins this summer. Accordingly, I offer a warm welcome to new members of the Board and thank those who have agreed to extend their membership. I thank especially those leaving the Board for their invaluable support during the first three years of its life. The workplaces and interests of Board members reflect both the international base of the New Phytologist and the wide range of subjects that it regularly publishes. SCI ratings support the belief that the New Phytologist is the world's leading broad-spectrum botanical journal. Given that breadth of subject matter, it is all the more remarkable that the journal has a high Impact Factor, 2·2.
The good health of the New Phytologist, and the charitable Trust that owns it, is further indicated by recent expansion of our activities. For each of the last three years, symposia, to which numerous distinguished international speakers contributed, have been organized in the UK. Proceedings have been published in the journal but they have also been made available for purchase as attractively bound separates, the most recent being Major Biological Issues Resulting from Anthropogenic Disturbance of the Nitrogen Cycle (eds. T. A. Mansfield, L. Sheppard and K. W. T. Goulding). This year, the symposium will be held in Montpellier, France, on the subject The Gap between Isolated Plants and Growing Canopies, while in 1999 it will move to the USA. In response to numerous requests, particularly from university teachers, we are now collecting recent Tansley Reviews around themes and publishing these too as separates. The first collection, Leaf Development and Function, is now available.
Like many forward looking journals, the New Phytologist is fully online (at http://www.journals.cup.org): unlike that of many other journals, our online version was launched free of charge to subscribers. This is just one of the many ways in which this independent journal can help botany and botanists. Indeed, monies from the Trust support a range of activities that promote botany (see volume 134, facing p. 197 for details). The journal will be 100 years old in 2002. The Trustees would be especially pleased to receive requests for support for activities that would mark the centenary.
As I noted in my previous Editorial, three years ago, Independent and International remain our key words.

Chemical analysis on a microscopic scale was performed on a TiN particle sample on silicon and on two patterned samples using a synchrotron source scanning photoemission microscope. For all the experiments, we exploit the ability, developed in our experimental system, to reach specific locations on the wafer and analyze the local chemical state.
Responses of phylloplane yeasts to UV-B (290–320 nm) radiation: interspecific differences in sensitivity

The sensitivity to UV-B (290–320 nm) radiation of common phylloplane yeasts from two contrasting UV-B environments was compared in the laboratory using mixtures of white light (PAR: 400–700 nm) and UV-B radiation from artificial lamp sources. Sporidiobolus salmonicolor, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and Cryptococcus sp., the dominant yeasts on leaves of tea (Camellia sinensis), were isolated in Sri Lanka (SL), while Sporidiobolus sp. and Bullera alba, dominant on faba bean (Vicia faba), were isolated in the U.K. Dose responses were determined separately for each yeast. UV-B reduced colony forming units (due to cell mortality or inactivation) and colony size (due to reduced multiplication) of all yeasts. The LD50 values and doses causing 50% reduction of cells per colony were higher for SL isolates than U.K. isolates. Results indicated that each yeast is somewhat vulnerable to UV-B doses representative of its natural habitat. The relative insensitivity of SL isolates was shown when SL and U.K. isolates were irradiated simultaneously with the same dose of UV-B. Of the two U.K. yeasts, B. alba was significantly more sensitive than Sporidiobolus sp. to UV-B. Except for R. mucilaginosa from SL, all yeasts demonstrated some photorepair in the presence of white light. White light provided relatively little protection for the U.K. isolate of Sporidiobolus sp. although it allowed increased colony size.
The spectral responses of Sporidiobolus sp. (U.K.) and of B. alba (U.K.) were broadly similar. Wavelengths longer than 320 nm had no measurable effect on colony forming units. However, colony survival was significantly reduced at 310 nm and all shorter wavebands. No colonies were counted at 290 nm or below.

Summary
Ozone (O3), ultra-violet (UV) radiation and climate change
The earth's atmosphere contains about 3 nl l-1 O3, that fraction being continuously turned over. Approximately 10% is dispersed in the troposphere, which extends 15 km above the ground, and 90% in the stratosphere, which extends up to 50 km. While man's activities are causing some increase in tropospheric O3, mainly around major urban areas, they are depleting stratospheric O3 on a global scale (Anon., 1993a,b). Depletion occurs because of the release of chlorine-containing compounds, such as chlorofluorocarbons and carbon tetrachloride, that promote O3 breakdown.
Solar radiation includes wavelengths as short as 200 nm but that below approximately 290 nm is absorbed in the atmosphere, mainly by O3. Since energy per quantum of radiation increases as wavelength decreases, O3 protects organisms from the most energy-rich, and potentially most damaging, wavelengths in solar radiation. The efficiency with which ozone absorbs UV decreases as wavelength increases, so progressive thinning of the O3 layer will allow shorter wavelengths to reach the earth's surface as well as allowing higher fluxes to be transmitted of the wavelengths already penetrating. It is significant that the cut-off wavelength is not constant but varies with season and time of day. For example, in Reading, England (51.5° N), the shortest detectable wavelength varied from 302 nm in January to 294 nm in July, and from 294 nm at noon to 300 nm at 17.00 hours in July (Anon., 1993b).
